Full Sydney Festival program announced on October 23

  • Semele Walk

    Sydney Town Hall, January 11-14

A music-theatre extravaganza by Ludger Engels with couture from Vivienne Westwood. Based on the oratorio Semele, by George Frideric Handel.

Take a walk on the wild side as high heels, billowing gowns and Handel collide in spectacular fashion. Set within the opulent surrounds of Sydney Town Hall, Semele Walk has models strutting between the performers and chamber orchestra as they rampage the entire length of the 30 metre gleaming white catwalk...

  • Urban

    Riverside Theatres, January 15-27.

The visceral rawness, brazen attitude and high-voltage energy of Latin street company Circolombia’s new show, URBAN, has put a rocket under contemporary circus. Following a sell-out run at London’s Roundhouse and seasons in Paris and New York, the troupe’s gritty, no holds barred show comes to Sydney.

  • David Byrne + St. Vincent

    State Theatre, January 17-18

Happenstance brought David Byrne (ex Talking Heads) and St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) together, but their new collaboration Love This Giant feels more like fate. The NYC-based duo has spent the past three years in a creative dialogue that has resulted in a work that is brash and, quite literally, brassy.

This is Our City in Summer!

Exuberant, exciting and forever effervescent – the best time to experience Sydney is in January, when the city is in full celebratory mode. From the 5 – 27 January 2013 Sydney will come alive with the world’s most wonderful summer festival. As one of Australia’s favourite annual cultural events, Sydney Festival presents the biggest and best of the world’s performing and visual arts, all coming together in an avalanche of artistic activity.

From Honda Festival Garden in Hyde Park and free concerts in The Domain, to theatre, music and dance, Sydney Festival uses most of Sydney’s venues including Carriageworks, State Theatre and Sydney Opera House.

The program is kaleidoscopic in its diversity, from late-night burlesque and cutting-edge dance to German theatre; from avant-garde classical to indie-style and Indonesian pop, the Festival has something to cater to every taste and every budget. Only in Sydney could a festival present huge free outdoor concerts like those at The Domain.  And in 2013, Sydney Festival will open with a new free event – Day One: An Opening in Three Acts – a series of events in some of Sydney’s favourite pedestrian precincts – Hyde Park, Darling Harbour and The Domain. Day One will provide entertainment throughout the day and into the evening for families and folk of all ages.

Inclusive programming, a broad range of free events and accessible pricing policies for ticketed shows means that Sydney Festival is open to all, welcoming Sydneysiders and visitors alike. Stay tuned on October 23 when the details of the full program will be announced.

Sydney Festival is the best way to celebrate Sydney in summer.
