Sydney art communities and attractions

Sydney is the home and inspiration of some of Australia’s most respected artists. As well as exhibiting in galleries, some of our most gifted artists regularly open their studios and give talks and practical demonstrations of their work.

Exploring artists’ studios

  • Artspace Sydney is a Woolloomooloo-based arts centre that connects artists, audiences and ideas. See the Tokyo/Sydney collaboration ‘Between Site and Space’ until April 18, and Laresa Kosloff’s recent Super 8 films in ‘Sensible World’ after that.
  • Sydney Art Tours takes visitors on a connoisseur’s tour of Sydney’s leading private galleries, as well as meeting artists at work in their own studios. There are regular Saturday walking tours covering areas like Surry Hills, Paddington, Waterloo and Darlington.
  • The Hawkesbury Artists, Artisans and Crafters'  Trail is a network of 20 working artists who open their rural galleries and sometimes their studios, for public viewing. Some also offer classes in their studios.

Don’t miss

  • The Arthouse Hotel  in Sydney’s city centre has an energetic program of exhibitions, life drawing classes and art-themed events that allow keen amateurs to interact with working artists.
  • Muru Mittigar  – “Pathway to Friends” – is an Aboriginal cultural and educational centre at Castlereagh, near Penrith on Sydney’s western outskirts. The centre’s Cultural Talk tour covers the culture and arts of the local Darug people.
  • Gavala Aboriginal Art Centre at Darling Harbour showcases authentic paintings and artefacts, and can arrange art history talks, didgeridoo and artefact presentations and cultural and dance performances for group bookings.

  • Bundeena & Maianbar Art Trail days on the 1st Sunday of every month. Artists’ studios are open to other artists and arts lovers. 
  • Artists in the Armory at Sydney Olympic Park monthly guided tours of  artists in residence at historic Newington Armoury.
